The motion tabled by the FF Plus in the Mpumalanga Legislature, requesting a sandpit for run-away trucks at the life-threatening De Rust T-junction outside Hazyview and the implementation of a compulsory stop at the Umbabha Estates Warehouse before these heavy vehicles take on the steep downhills of the mountain pass, was turned into a racial issue by the EFF.
The compulsory stop will ensure that trucks come to a standstill and gear down to the right gear before going down the steep decline.
It is astounding that the EFF would so strongly oppose a proposal that could potentially save lives just because it was put forward by a white person and is supposedly, therefore, racist.
Trucks, in particular, tend to lose control on the downhills and this has resulted in quite a few fatal accidents.
The FF Plus will not allow the EFF’s political opportunism to get in the way of the party putting forward proposals aimed at making Mpumalanga’s roads safer for road users.
The FF Plus has already submitted an integrated traffic safety plan to the Mpumalanga MEC for Public Works, Ms Mohita Latchminarian, to ensure better safety on the coal as well as the non-coal routes.
