Policeman arrested as suspect in farm attack on elderly farmer

A policeman of Madibogo was arrested as one of two suspects, in North West on Wednesday July 15, 2015, after an attack on an elderly farmer near Coligny.

Three robbers attacked Peet Nortjé (67) late in the afternoon when he arrived home from the corn fields on his farm Kareebosbult. According to Sergeant Kelebogile Moleko, North West police spokesperson, the robbers first tied two of the workers in an office near the house.

They tied Nortjé in the house with wire (presumably coat hangers). They kicked and beat him and stole weapons and money from the safe. “The wire cut his arm and he had to get stitches,” said a friend of him who did not want to be identified.

Nortjé called this friend after the robbers fled in a white Golf. According to Moleko, police in Coligny asked the Tactical Response Unit to be on the lookout for the car. It was found near Potchefstroom and two suspects were arrested. “Weapons were also confiscated from them,” said Moleko.

Moleko confirmed one of the suspects is a policeman. He and his alleged accomplice are detained in Potchefstroom.

Piet Pretorius, who serves with Nortjé in their church consistory in Coligny, said Nortjé lives alone on the farm about 25 km from Coligny after his wife, Ingrid, died. “He also had two sons who died young. He’s okay, but very traumatized.”

Moleko said Nortjé was still too shocked on Wednesday to make a full statement.
