Three male suspects aged between 20 and 34-year-old were arrested and charged with robbery, inciting public violence, attempted robbery, and unlawful discharge of firearm as well as two charges of assault with grievous bodily harm on Friday, 5 February 2021.

The arrest follows after Mount Ayliff Tactical Response Team responded to an incident that happened along N2 road next to Mzimvubu River (between Mt Ayliff and Mt Frere) where a liquor truck was robbed and looted.

The armed suspects who were busy offloading liquor from the truck assaulted police as they arrived on the scene and two police officers sustained injuries. They were reported to be in a stable condition and recovery.

All three suspects are expected to appear in Mount Frere Magistrates’ court on Tuesday 9 February 2021.

The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga wished the injured police members a speedy recovery and commended them for enforcing the law without fear or favour.
