Another mortar has been discovered in Pretoria west, putting the police on high alert on Friday. After identifying the object found in Daspoort around noon, the police, the bomb squad and members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) closed off the street to protect residents.
The mortar was discovered behind the Total Moot garage in Moot Street.
Conrad Naudé, chairperson for the Hercules CPF, said the area was cordoned off immediately as police awaited the arrival of the bomb squad to determine whether the mortar was live.
The device was declared safe and removed.
Several live mortars have been discovered in the Pretoria west area in recent weeks. Three mortars were found near Pretoria west High School during October and 16 others at a scrap-metal dealership in the west of Pretoria.
One of the 16 mortars exploded, killing a man and injuring another.
Two other mortars were also removed at a mountain in Atteridgeville last Thursday. ANC councillor Makopo Makola, has said mortars are discovered in the area on a regular basis.
“Finding mortars are practically an every day occurrence in Phomolong,” he said.
