DA opposes R1.4 billion upgrade to Parliament

The DA will strongly oppose the proposed R1.4 billion upgrade to the Parliamentary Precinct proposed by Speaker Baleka Mbete. At the next sitting of the Parliamentary Oversight Authority (POA), we will fight the implementation of this upgrade.

The plan for the upgrade is excessive in the extreme.

Mbete wants Parliament to spend hundreds of millions (R427 million) on a massive 1500 seat hall for Parliament to be used only occasionally when Parliament has joint sittings of the NCOP and the National Assembly.

The current arrangement where the NCOP and National Assembly members simply share the space in the National Assembly is more than adequate.

Parliament already has housing for MPs at several parliamentary villages, extensive underground parking facilities and a number of restaurants on and around the precinct. The DA does not see the need for a new apartment complex, underground parking facility and additional restaurants on the precinct. Together all of these projects come to R1.4 billion…
