Fake foreign currency peddlers remanded in custody

Temwa Lisa Masoka (27), and Andrew Hopkins Mzaliwa (55), appeared at the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 16 July 2019, for alleged possession of fake foreign currency.

The accused were arrested by members of the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit last week following a tip-off that they were allegedly selling fake US dollars and Euro notes to unsuspecting victims in exchange of cash in local currency.

Stacks of foreign currency were confiscated from the pair for further investigation.

During bail application proceedings, it was established that Masoka had an outstanding warrant of arrest on her name emanating from a similar offence in Johannesburg. Meanwhile Mzaliwa was granted a R5 000.00 bail, the case against the pair has been postponed to 29 August 2019, pending further investigation.
