An unexplained fire in Durban Addington hospital resulted in 84 patients being evacuated. Elevators have been out of service in hospital for 18 months. State hospitals are regularly in the news and not about good medical care but rather patients tied to chairs, lack of high care medical equipment, and the fact that patients often have to take care of bedding themselves.

The quality of food has drastically deteriorated and staff’s ‘couldn’t care attitude has even lead to deaths of patients. Claims against hospitals for surgery and treatment that went wrong has cost the state millions of rand a year.

Medical experts warn the country about the day the a national health plan is put in place that will force private hospitals to join the diabolic scheme.
