Child neglect: Viral video leads to arrest of mother

South African Police Service

A 34 year old woman will appear at the Volksrust Magistrates’ Court on 20 June 2019, for charges of child neglect. The woman’s four children were captured on a video which has since gone viral on social media, by a man calling himself uncle, gallivanting unsupervised on the street in a bad state.

The children believed to be between the ages of three and 13 were apparently left alone by their mother who apparently left them to fend for themselves in an unventilated shack, since early June this year.

The suspect was arrested today around Kabokweni, near Nelspruit after police launched an investigation soon after the emergence of the video.

The Provincial Commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma cautioned parents to take care of their children, especially in this day and age where they (children) are highly sought by criminals to further their criminal activities. General Zuma indicated that if a person goes away that person must leave the children with family or any other responsible person.
