South African Police Service

The SAPS Acting Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers has condemned the ongoing violent protests in the Lephalale, Makhado and Giyani Clusters with the most strongest terms.

This condemnation follows the violent protest actions which erupted in Ga-Seleka area outside Lephalale until this morning, 27 June 2018. A group of people calling themselves “Ga-Seleka concerned group” barricaded the D3110 road with their private vehicles and they further went to R572 road which is going to Ga-Seleka Community hall and blocked it with stones. They then forced a passing bus driver to give them the keys which they intended to block the road with it.

These cars were then towed away by to the Police to the Police Station. The Police arranged for the spare key for the bus which was taken to town safely. All these roads are now cleared.

During this situation, some cars were damaged with stones but at this stage there are no other reported incidents of damage to properties or injuries.

Cases of public violence, intimidation and common robbery were opened, there is no arrest at this stage but the manhunt is still on.

In Giyani, residents went on rampage and barricaded the R81 road between Giyani and Malamulele with sand and upon arrival of the Police, the sand was removed and the road was cleared.

Still in Giyani, the same community members barricaded another road between Giyani and Thomo but the situation remains unstable.

Meanwhile in the Mara Policing area outside Makhado this morning, 27 June 2018, the violent protest actions have erupted at Kgobokanang-Makgato public road.

A group of community members blocked this road with burning tyres and rubbles demanding a tar road.

The situation in this area is still tense but the Public Order Police Unit is still intervening.

The situation is now calm in all these affected areas but the Public Order Police Unit is still monitoring.

“Lawlessness will not be tolerated in this Province and therefore, members of the community are once more advised and encouraged to follow the due processes in case they are having complaints or concerns. We are calling for calmness immediately in all the affected areas, not so, we are going to deal with all those who are involved decisively and without compromise,” concluded General Scheepers.
