‘Bank following’ robbery syndicate bust, Giyani

Members of the Community in the Giyani area have been subjected to a reign of terror by a group of criminals who were targeting them from different banks within the Giyani CBD.

Victims were often followed after withdrawing money from the banks in the area and when arriving at their homes and these criminals would then pounce on them and rob them at gunpoint.

Following a number of the reported incidents which occurred since October 2017 with similar modus operandi, a Dedicated Team of Police Detectives led by Colonel Chris Mabasa was established and the initial investigations ensued.

These investigations were up and running around the clock until this breakthrough was made on 6 January 2018, when two suspects aged between 25 and 31, were arrested during a robbery in progress next to one of the banks in the Giyani CBD.

In all the case dockets which were opened, the consolidated cash amount of money robbed from the individual members of the community is R3.7 million and more cases are still being reported which will increase this amount. During the arrest, two unlicensed firearms were recovered.

Anyone who became a victim of this syndicate, may go to Giyani Police Station or the nearest Police Station or they may call Colonel Chris Mabasa at 082 469 0739 as a matter of urgency.
