Fifteen years into U.S. government’s “war on terror” launched after the deadly 9/11 terrorist attacks, a majority of U.S. voters are concerned about possible terrorist attacks in the country in the near future, a new poll said on Monday.
According to the new Morning Consult poll, 56 percent of U.S. voters think it is at least somewhat likely that a terrorist attack will occur in the United States over the next few months.
While less than half Democrats say that the United States is safer now, an overwhelming majority of Republicans think otherwise, the poll found, with more than seven in 10 Republicans saying that a terrorist attack is somewhat or very likely.
The poll came as the country was on high alert against terror attacks after three bomb attacks occurred over two days last month.
Some 29 people were wounded in a blast on Sept. 17 in New York City, hours after another pipe bomb exploded on the same day along the route of a Marine charity run in the U.S. state of New Jersey in what U.S. authorities believed was a planned attack.
One day later in New Jersey, an explosive device inside a suspicious package at a train station exploded while being examined by the authorities.
Apart from the trifecta of bombings, 10 people were also wounded on Sept. 17 in a stabbing attack at a mall in the northern U.S. state of Minnesota.
