Three arrested before robbery in Butterworth

PORT ELIZABETH – The Mthatha National Intervention Unit arrested three suspects on Thursday following a tip off of a robbery in progress, Eastern Cape police said.

Police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said the suspects aged between 32 and 37 were arrested early on Thursday morning at Zitulele Industrial area in Butterworth.

He said police received information that the suspects were allegedly en route to commit a robbery.

“All the suspects were arrested at Zitulele Industrial Area, Butterworth and were in possession of unlicensed firearms, namely two pistols with seven rounds of ammunition, said Manatha.

The suspects are facing charges which include possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of unlicensed ammunition and conspiracy to commit robbery.

“The fire-arms will be sent for ballistic testing to establish whether they have been used earlier in the commission of crimes around Butterworth and surrounding areas,” said Manatha.

The three suspects are expected to appear in the Butterworth magistrate’s court soon.
