Suspects shot in foiled farm attack
Farm attack Laersdrift

A War erupted on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at Laersdrift area in Limpopo when at least twelve heavily armed suspects attacked a farmer on his farm.

Three of the attackers of which two were shot, have been arrested. The two wounded attackers are apparently under police guard in the hospital.

Farmers in the area together with SAPD and Die Spoorsnyers (Trackers), cordoned off roads to catch the men on the run.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, a police spokesperson in Limpopo, the armed suspects arrived at the farm in a Toyota Quantum minibus and a Toyota Corolla on Tuesday.

They apparently asked Japie du Toit if they could buy cattle from him. Du Toit told them he did not sell cattle any more. One of the suspects apparently pulled out a gun and started shooting. Du Toit managed to find shelter and in a back-and-forth shooting one of the attackers was shot.

Du Toit’s son apparently left the scene on a motorcycle to call for help.

Farmers in the area pursued the attackers. During the chase the attackers jumped out of the minivan and Corolla and fled. There was a shootout between the farmers and the attackers.

Another attacker was apparently wounded during the chase. The police, farmers, Die Spoorsnyers (Trackers) and helicopters searched through the night for the remaining group of suspects. The third suspect was also arrested.

The search for the other suspects continues. Anyone with information can call the police emergency number at 10111.
