The owner of a Sodwana lodge said a lot of robberies do not feature in the news at all.

“Everyone keeps it quiet because it can have a big effect on the tourist industry.”

Waves of robberies are on the rise since the beginning of this year in the Sodwana Bay area.

In one of the recent robberies Thys Besselaar (35) was shot with a shotgun in the leg on May 15, 2015 at the Certainty Lodge at Sodwana Bay.

Besselaar’s right leg was amputated at the hip in Durban on Monday. Complications after the amputation led to his death, according to Tokkie Hugo, owner of the Certainty Lodge where Besselaar, 35, was shot.
