Buks Oosthuizen (47) died after he was attacked by four men in the early morning hours on Saturday. Buks and his family were camping next to the Vaal River. Frans Oosthuizen, Buks’s brother, told Maroela Media the culprits held the family captive for more than an hour.

According to Frans, his brother Buks, his wife Susan, their three children and two of the children’s friends went camping on Friday next to a place on the Vaal River. In the early hours of Saturday morning, Buks was sitting around a fire when he heard Susan scream and as he stood up, was knocked unconscious with a shovel.

Four attackers entered the caravan and as Susan screamed, the thugs threatened to hit the children with a hammer. The 12-year-old son was pushed into a car and forced to supply information about the family, said Frans. The entire family was held captives for over an hour while the suspects devoured the food, played music, danced, and celebrated their spoils in a ghastly manner.

According to Frans, during this time, the attackers repeatedly assaulted Susan with an unknown object and then turned their attention to Buks who remained unconscious on the ground. The thugs hit him several times with a shovel.

The attackers locked the motor vehicle with the child inside and threw away the keys. They departed with two mobile phones and a laptop.

Susan waited awhile and when it appeared to be safe, she managed to get Buks into the family truck and rushed to the nearest hospital. Buks was declared dead on arrival.

Susan suffered several head wounds and received stitches and has since then been discharged. The 12-year-old boy sustained minor injuries to his arm and the other children were unharmed.

At this point, the police could not be contacted for comment.
