An 80-year-old farmer is recovering in hospital after he and his 78-year-old wife were attacked on their Villiersdorp farm in the Western Cape on Wednesday, police said.
The farmer, Danie du Toit, was robbed of five firearms, wine, a television set and jewellery after four unidentified males gained entry to his farm around 01:00, police said on Wednesday.
The man was tied up with electrical cords and assaulted with a rifle, while his wife, Martie, was tied up with shoe laces and covered with a blanket.
The 78-year-old woman raised the alarm after she managed to loosen the laces.
She called her son, a doctor who lives in the area, who ran to their rescue.
The African National Congress in the Western Cape said the 80-year-old man was in the hospital undergoing tests.
The robbers broke the butt of a rifle on his head, the party said in a statement.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said it was not clear how the robbers managed to flee the scene.
Police have opened a case of house robbery.
No arrests have been made so far.
