Warning – graphic image: A suspect who attacked an off duty Policeman with a knobkerrie was shot and killed on Old Main Road in Canelands near Verulam, KZN on Tuesday, 4 December 2018.

At approximately 18:58 Reaction Unit South Africa received numerous calls from several Policeman requesting assistance for their colleague who was under attack. Reaction Officers were dispatched to the scene and upon arrival met with the off duty SAPS Official.

He informed RUSA Members that he had pulled off to the side off the road in his VW Polo when two unknown men approached his vehicle. One individual was carrying a knobkerrie and the second person was in possession of a metal pipe.

The two men broke the windows on the vehicle and began assaulting the Policeman when he drew his state issued 9mm pistol and fired at one suspect. Both suspects fled in different directions. The Officer pursued one suspect who collapsed in a cane field.

Medics assessed the suspect and found that he had been shot in the chest and died at the scene. He was still clenching an Okapi pocket knife in his right hand. The motive for the attack is believed to be robbery. The suspect is expected to be linked to several other robberies that have occured in the area.

RUSA has responded to several callouts in the same area in recent months where couples were attacked by two suspects carrying a knobkerrie and a metal pipe while parked in isolated parts of the sugar cane plantation. In one incident the suspects made off with a Toyota Conquest belonging to man who was parked in an isolated area with a woman who he had just met in a supermarket.

The Policeman was injured in the attack and was transported to hospital by ambulance.
