Johannesburg – Athletics South Africa (ASA) is excited to welcome Twizza as the title sponsor of the Twizza ASA U18 and U20 Track & Field Championships that will take place in the beautiful Winelands at the Dal Josaphat Stadium, Paarl from Thursday 28 March 2019 – Saturday 30 March 2019.

The sponsorship agreement is for the duration of three years and the official name is now Twizza ASA U18 and U20 Track & Field Championships.

The Twizza ASA U18 and U20 Track & Field Championships are the breeding ground for the next generation of South African athletics heroes.  The success of this championship was proven through the performances of South Africa’s athletes at the last World U18 Championships in Nairobi in 2017, with 5 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 3 bronze medals. At the IAAF World U20 Championships Tampere 2018, South Africa finished sixth overall despite being on three golds with USA, Ethiopia and Great Britain – all of whom had more silver.

In 2017 South Africa took gold and silver in the men’s 100m through Tshenolo Lemao and Retshidisitswe Mlenga. In a history making race, the roles were reversed in the 200m.

There were also gold medals in the men’s and women’s 400m hurdles through Sokwakhana “Soks” Zazini and Zeney van der Walt and Breyton Poole in the high jump. These athletes continue to improve and are now household names in SA Athletics, inspiring the next generation of young athletes. In 2018, Zazini and van der Walt, added to their gold medal tally at the World U20 Championships, with shot putter Kyle Blignaut also taking gold.

The new sponsorship will raise the profile of these championships which will in turn give the sport a huge boost and further allow ASA to grow athletics.

“We are excited to welcome Twizza as the title sponsor of the Youth and Junior Championships,” said Aleck Skhosana, the President of ASA.  “The standard of South African athletics has shown tremendous improvement at both the junior and senior levels over recent years.  With the support of a title sponsor it allows us to host a world class championship where South Africa’s Junior Track & Field stars can shine, taking their talent to the next level.”

Ajee Valentine, Twizza’s National Sponsorship Manager said: “Twizza is South Africa’s first official Proudly South African carbonated soft drink.  We are exceptionally proud to be the title sponsor of the Twizza ASA U18 and U20 Track & Field Championships.  Track & Field is the flagship of world athletics, where SA boasts immense talent at both the junior and senior level.  The championship provides us with an excellent platform to support Track & Field, while creating awareness of the Twizza brand and product.  We want consumers including athletes and supporters to experience Twizza’s great taste and quality.”

The secondary sponsors for the championship are Adidas, Sizwe & 3SixtyLife, Vital and Rhodes Food Group.

Athletes to watch: Sokwakhana “Soks” Zazini, Zeney van der Walt and Breyton Poole, to mention just a few.
