World Drowning Prevention Day calls for accelerated action to prevent drowning, offers strategies to save lives

As you know, one of the outcomes of the adoption of the UN General Assembly Resolution on Global Drowning Prevention (A/RES/75/273) is the designation of every 25th July as World Drowning Prevention Day (WDPD) and a request that WHO facilitate observance of this day. The purpose is to commemorate the lives lost and impact of drowning and to serve as an opportunity to raise awareness of this preventable tragedy worldwide.

As we approach this year’s commemoration, I would like to update you on preparations that WHO and partners are making for WDPD 2022. We expect many core elements of last year’s WDPD activities, materials, and messages to be retained, and also apply this year, providing a common and consistent basis to build on.
