Every August in the United Kingdom is National road victim month and although National road victim month is done in commemoration of Princess Diana following her death in August, it is still held annually to remember people that have been killed or injured on roads. Though South Africa does not commemorate national road victim month, South Africa still has the issue of road accidents as transport Minister Fikile Mbalula recorded that in the first quarter of 2022 more than 700 people were killed. This is an increase of 78% compared to 75% in 2021.

Alarmingly, the World Bank also recorded 83% of road crash fatalities and injuries. Road traffic accidents are the major cause of significant injuries resulting in permanent disabilities. According to road safety campaign estimates, there is an estimate that more than 10 South Africans a day are involved in road accidents that result in permanent impairment.
