Police Ministry and SAPS intensify interventions to prevent and combat taxi violence

The South African Police Service(SAPS) led by the Police Ministry and the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Sipho Hlomuka, will on Monday, 10 April 2023, engage Taxi industry role players in an effort to find lasting solutions to ongoing acts of violence and intimidation between rival taxi associations.

The engagement comes as scores of taxi owners have in the less than a month, been gunned down in the KwaZulu-Natal province.

Police are investigating the murders, which are believed to be as a result of ongoing taxi feuds.

It is on this score that the SAPS led by the Police Minister, General Bheki Cele on Monday, 03 April 2023, met with owners of the main taxi associations responsible for taxi operations in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng respectively. The meeting resolved that a Peace Agreement agreeing on amongst other things, a ceasefire be drafted and signed between the involved taxi associations.
