K9 Unit confiscate abalone worth over R3,7 million in Gqeberha

Gqeberha K9 unit arrested a 38-year-old male and confiscated abalone to the approximate street value of R3,7 million on Thursday, 22 July 2021.

It is alleged that at about 14:30, members acted on information received and executed a search warrant at a house in Shauder Avenue in Holland Park. Police seized 140 plastic bags containing frozen de-shelled abalone (1400kg), 13 plastic bags containing dried abalone (233.88kg), 5 deep freezers, a scale, and a cellphone. The abalone was handed over to the Department of Sea Fisheries for storage.

The suspect was detained for contravening the Marine Living Resource Act, 19 of 1998 Regulation 36 subsect 1 – illegal possession of abalone.

He is expected to appear in court soon.
