South African is second best on the continent and 29th in the world for its highway system. For many years we held the reputation for one of the best road networks worldwide but now some drivers may question this as they swerve around potholes on the highway – a place they were seldom seen before.

Blame for this aside, suddenly encountering a pothole on a national highway can be extremely jarring. The CEO of MasterDrive, Eugene Herbert, says: “The damage to your vehicle, yourself, passengers and others around if you hit a pothole at 120km/h or faster is a frightening thought. Angry demands that roads be fixed is less effective for your safety than an immediate change to driving behaviour.

“While the importance of fixing roads cannot be denied, the first step to protect yourself and those around you is to be prepared for a pothole. Avoid the damaging and possibly tragic consequences of hitting a pothole on the highway by following the same guidance to dodging potholes…
