The Kwazulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Mxolisi Kaunda, has expressed his shock at yet another road crashes that has claimed five (5) lives in Durban earlier today.
The crash happened this morning at the intersection of Queen Nandi Drive and Quarry Park Place in Greenwood Park, just outside Durban when a Mercedes Benz truck rammed into two minibus taxis. It is alleged that the minibuses went through a red traffic light, in apparent disregard for road traffic rules and signs, and thereby causing the horrific and fatal crash.
There were five people who died at the scene and a further 15 people sustained injuries.
Kaunda was especially shocked as he had learnt of another incident that had occurred in Ladysmith on Sunday afternoon, where nine (9) people also lost their lives.
“Yesterday (18 March 2018) we went to sleep with the news that nine people had died in Ladysmith. Now this morning, we woke up to reports of a further five people who died in Durban. This is quite disturbing that such incidents are happening as we scale up our plans for the busy Easter holiday period. We further wish to appeal to motorists especially drivers who will carry the responsibility of ferrying citizens who will be travelling to their different places of worship to make sure that their modes of transportation are roadworthy and that they strictly adhere to road traffic rules and signs. We also call for other motorists who will travel to different parts of the province to take caution and exercise safe travelling patterns such as safe following distances, switching on head lights to ensure visibility, not drinking and driving as well as showing patience and tolerance on the road,” said Kaunda.
He added: “Our law enforcement officers will be deployed across the province for high visibility during this busy period. Through our road safety programmes, government will continue to raise awareness as part of working to minimise crashes and fatalities on our roads.
