Celebrating its highly anticipated Tshwane debut on Sunday, 10 November 2024, the Boxer Super Run will boast an unprecedented R147K prize purse, adding even more excitement to South Africa’s most social 5km run in the Jacaranda City.
“In 2024, we are excited to host not one but two Boxer Super Run 5km races—the first in Durban on Sunday, 13 October, and the second in Tshwane on Sunday, 10 November,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports. “Both events will feature an impressive R147K prize purse, totalling a remarkable R294K across the series. This is a game-changer for 5km racing in South Africa. With the 5km now officially recognized as a World Championship event, we’re proud to elevate the standard and offer athletes the recognition they deserve for their hard work. Prize money will be awarded to both Elite and Open Wave runners, with the Top 8 male and female finishers in the Elite Race receiving payouts, and the winners each taking home R20K. In the Open Wave, the Top 3 finishers in age categories ranging from Junior to 70+ will also be rewarded for their performance.”
“The 5km distance is always a fan favourite—it’s fast, but it also tests an athlete’s endurance and tactical ability,” says Meyer. “This unique blend of speed and strategy makes it a thrilling challenge for elite runners. With the added motivation of a substantial prize purse, we’re excited to showcase the incredible talent and competitiveness of South African athletes. The Elite Race will be a standout spectator event. In 2023, Boxer Athletics Club stars Precious Mashele and Glenrose Xaba set the bar high, clocking record-breaking times of 13:44 and 16:03, respectively, as the fastest South Africans to finish a 5km on home soil at that time. Will they or their fellow competitors break these records in 2024? Come and witness the excitement for yourself.”
“We’re incredibly proud to be hosting two world-class 5km events in 2024,” says Lee-Ann Pillay, Head of Marketing at Boxer Superstores. “By offering an impressive R147K prize purse in each city—Durban and Tshwane—we’re able to reward South Africa’s elite runners for their dedication and hard work, bringing the total prize purse to a remarkable R294K in 2024. We trust that this will serve as added motivation for the athletes to give their all on race day. We invite all runners and spectators to stick around, support the elites, and witness world-class racing right here on South African soil.”
The action of the Boxer Super Run Tshwane will culminate in thrilling style with the Elite Men’s and Women’s Waves on Sunday, 10 November 2024. Expect an exciting finish as South Africa’s finest athletes battle it out for the coveted titles of King and Queen of the Boxer Super Run in Tshwane, in what is sure to be a spectacular conclusion to a day filled with 5km excitement.
