Traffic calming measures considered on stretch of road claiming 8 lives in the Eastern Cape

The Department of Transport has lobbied the national roads agency, SANRAL, to increase safety features on that stretch following a string of serious and often fatal crashes.

The latest of those crashes claimed a total of *8 lives* (7 males and 1 female – all adults) yesterday, Sunday, May 15th, when two minibus taxis collided head-on at a spot commonly known as eMakhaphetshwini.

The scene of yesterday’s horrific crash is the spot in which the Eastern Cape Department of Transport launched its Easter Arrive Alive campaign last month. During the launch, Transport MEC, Xolile Nqatha further highlighted the need for some speed calming measures on that road.

Between now and the implementation of those plans, MEC Nqatha has urged motorists and pedestrians alike to be extra cautious at all times. There had also been a number of accidents involving pedestrians on the same road, some being hit and run incidents.
