Severely fatigued 69-year-old hiker rescued at Platteklip Gorge

Teams of volunteers and professionals from Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) responded to Platteklip Gorge on Thursday afternoon, to assist a severely fatigued 69-year-old hiker.

The hiker and her family had caught the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway cable car to the top of Table Mountain earlier in the day. After enjoying a beautiful morning on the top of the mountain, the group of four started down the popular Platteklip Gorge hiking trail shortly after 12h00.

After spending several hours battling down the steep stepped trail, in the unusually warm winter conditions, it became clear that she was not going to be able to make it down the mountain without assistance.

An urgent call for assistance was made to the emergency number – 021 937 0300.

She was assessed and treated by a Western Cape Department of Health & Wellness EMS rescue paramedic, before being helped into a rescue stretcher.

The team once again used the Cascade Rescue Company Terra-Tamer stretcher…
