Road users cautioned as Easter traffic volumes are expected to rise

Pretoria: The Easter long weekend is upon us with traffic volumes expected to increase particularly on the main national routes such as N1, N2, N3 and N4.  The Arrive Alive campaign calls upon road users to exercise caution and to obey the rules of the road.  Thursday, the 29th of March 2018 and the 2nd of April 2018 are expected to be the busiest days in terms of traffic movements, this long weekend.   
 
During the same period since 2015, traffic volumes increased on these national routes from 1 046 780 in 2015, 1 248 824 in 2016, and over 1. 3 million in 2017.  Currently the National Department of Transport, through RTMC manages a total of 12, 270 million registered vehicles, 300 000 registered taxis and 63 000 registered buses – with a total of 12, 280 million licensed drivers. 
 
The Department through RTMC, will deploy over 18 916 law enforcement officers countrywide particularly on hazardous routes to ensure safety of road users. The Arrive Alive campaign will heighten its road safety education to ensure that road users are well aware of their road safety responsibilities and;
•    adhere to the speed limit and they also buckle up.
•    avoid driving under the influence of alcohol 
•    avoid using cellphones while driving
•    ensure driver fitness and roadworthiness of their vehicles
•    take regular breaks
•    avoid jay-walking and cross streets at marked intersections
