Project Doper was launched in 2022 and aimed at addressing troublesome drug syndicates operating in Odendaalsrus and Welkom Policing precincts. The project was operationalised from 09:00 on 10 August 2023 by the Provincial Organized Crime, Welkom and Thabong Crime Intelligence, Crime Intelligence Surveillance Unit, Provincial Tracking Team, Tactical Response Team (TRT), Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit, Flying Squad, Lejweleputswa DOCC, Welkom LCRC, Welkom and Ladybrand K9 Units.
A total of 16 cases of Dealing in drugs and one case of possession of drugs were registered against the arrested suspects including a kingpin of drug dealers in Welkom. During the arrest of the kingpin, drugs which consisted of Mandrax tablets, Crystal Meth, and CAT with a street value of more than R320 000-00 were seized. Two vehicles used in the commission of a crime, the digital weighing scale used to weigh drugs, an undisclosed amount of cash, and an unknown amount of Kruger rands were also confiscated.
