The Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport MEC, Mr. Mandla Ndlovu has learnt with great disappointment about today’s incidence whereby female officials were attacked by a group of taxi operators on Friday, 04 Aug 2023.
The female Transport Inspectorate officials were conducting their daily operations along the R546 road between Embalenhle and Evander in the early morning. At about 08h00 more than 50 taxis were impounded for failing to comply with the National Land Transport Act (NLTA).
It is alleged that a group of taxi operators who were not happy about the law enforcement operation that was conducted, mobilized and attacked the traffic officials and further set alight two vehicles belonging to the unit. Three vehicles were also damaged during the attack. One officer was disarmed and her service firearm was then taken from her by the group of taxi operators.
MEC Ndlovu has strongly condemned the unruly conduct by the taxi operators.
