On 06 December 2023, the law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders collaborated and pounced on undocumented persons and illegal miners.
The multidisciplinary integrated illegal mining operation was led by Gauteng Provincial Head: ORS, Brigadier Chester Spiers
The operation enjoyed the support of the South African Defence Force, Department of Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens, Mogale City Traffic, Mogale City Public Safety Office, Community Safety Patrollers and local private security companies.
During the operation, about 74 persons were arrested of which two were for dealing in liquor without licenses, one for possession of explosives, eight for illegal mining and 63 for undocumented persons.
Illegal mining tools of the trade were also confiscated during the operation and this included, explosive gel sticks, 46 Phendukas, 12 generators, 15 extension cords, 30 bags containing gold-bearing material, 15 electrical motors, 15 chisels,…
