Joint enforcement operation on the R80 freeway leads to multiple arrests

PRETORIA: About 17 people in total were arrested on the R80 freeway yesterday morning between 06:00am until the afternoon for reckless & negligent driving and crossing the freeway dangerously. This is part of the Road Traffic Management Corporation attempt to target motorists who are ignoring the road traffic regulations.

The joint law enforcement operation was conducted with the National Traffic Police, Tshwane Metro Police together with Gauteng community safety focusing on drivers overtaking on the yellow lane and harassing other motorists. During the operation 8 pedestrians were arrested for crossing the freeway dangerously, and 9 drivers for negligent and recklessness.

Officials also issued about 43 AARTO notices relating to un-roadworthy vehicles, driving without a seatbelt, use of mobile phone while driving and other traffic related offences.

The RTMC received numerous complaints about the conduct of taxi operators harassing other motorists on this stretch of the road between N4 highway and the Brits road exit.

As we intensify our road safety efforts to reduce dangerous driving on the R80 highway, the operation will continue for the rest of the week. We continue to urge members of the public to report traffic incidents to: 0861 400 800.
