Emer-G-Med paramedics together with multiple emergency service agencies, responded to the M1 South near the Melrose area for a serious motor vehicle collision.
On arrival on scene, a Toyota Hilux was found to have careened across the center median and collided head-on with another LDV as well as a luxury sedan.
All five occupants of the light delivery vehicle suffered fatal injuries and were declared dead on arrival of paramedics.
Seven occupants of the other vehicles involved were found with injuries ranging from moderate to severe, with two in critical condition.
Advanced life support intervention was needed to stabilize them before they were transported rapidly under the care of Emergency Care Practitioners to nearby hospitals for further care.
