DOT prioritising safety amongst scholars

The Department’s Road Safety officials supported by eThekwini Metro Police personnel took its scholar patrol programme to Palmcroft Primary School in Phoenix, north of Durban this week.

This project aims to assist learners at their most vulnerable when crossing a busy street to and from school. Learners are trained to operate a scholar patrol under the supervision of an adult. The school is now among 43 registered operational scholar patrols in the Durban region, which includes eThekwini Metro, iLembe and Ugu Districts.

To ensure that the scholar patrol operates effectively, the necessary patrol equipment is provided, and training is undertaken by the principal Road Safety Officers in the Region.

Durban Region’s Ann Bonhomme and Marlini Pillay from Head Office led the programme for Palmcroft Primary School, which is one of the twelve (12) schools under Bonhomme’s supervision.
