Pietermaritzburg: The Minister of Transport Dr. Blade Nzimande and the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Mr. Willies Mchunu, will host a consultative Imbizo with the community of Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas on Saturday, 23 June 2018 at the Caluza Community Sports Center.
The Minister and Premier will engage with members of the community on all matters of transport, community and governance related in the public sector to find out first hand some of the concerns the community will outline.
In his recent National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Budget presentation, Minister Nzimande undertook, among others to:
• prioritise the three provinces that depend on Metrorail train services as part of their public transport system – KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Western Cape – when putting plans to improve the country’s public transport system;
• tackle the safety and reliability of Metrorail in KwaZulu-Natal – Gauteng and Western Cape corridor;
• launch the Shosholoza Meyl long distance service train in the Pietermaritzburg to Kokstad and the Durban via Port Elizabeth to Cape Town corridors;
• address taxi violence which has already claimed lives in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and Gauteng.
• through the new Rural Transport Strategy also prioritise transport infrastructure and services in rural areas.
Also joining the Minister during the community imbizo will be the Deputy Minister of Transport Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda, Umgungundlovu District and Msunduzi Local Municipality Mayors Councillors T.E. Maphumulo and T. Njilo respectively, senior national and provincial officials together with key transport stakeholders.
