Statement by the Transport Minister on the end to the Bus Strike

Cape Town – The Minister of Transport, Dr Blade Nzimande, welcomes the decision by all parties involved in the negotiations to end the protracted bus strike, which persisted for about a month.

The negotiated settlement comes to effect, today, the 15th May 2018, following the organised labour and employers, leading to the calling off of the strike.

The Minister is grateful for the decision to end the strike whilst parties will continue to find a permanent solution to some aspects of their disputes as soon as possible so that we can continue with the building of a safe public transport.

Minister Nzimande said that although it took longer for the parties to reach a settlement, government welcomes this development, which will put an end to commuter uncertainly and inconveniences.

“This new dispensation will afford the parties to engage on the broader transformation issues affecting this important mode of transport, which is used by 20% of the daily commuting public in South Africa,” said Minister Nzimande.

Our ultimate objective will be to ensure that this industry is indeed modernised and responsive to the transport needs of the majority of South Africans, young and old, by improving access, sustainability and safety.

“As part of our stakeholder consultation, we will continue to engage the bus industry on pertinent issues that affect the industry including issues relating to bus subsidies, broadening the supply value chain of the industry, to include the historically marginalised groups, including, women, youth and people living with disability,” emphasised Minister Nzimande.
