A 33-year-old mother sustained minor injuries while shielding her 18-month-old daughter during a structural collapse in Mountview – KZN a short while ago today (Tuesday, 14/07/2026).
The Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Operations Centre received a call for assistance at approximately 13:07 after a retaining wall collapsed onto a wood & iron home in an unnamed road off Bridgeford Drive.
On arrival, Reaction Officers found that the mother and child had already been freed from the damaged structure with the assistance of neighbours. It was established that the toddler had been asleep inside the home when the neighbouring retaining wall suddenly collapsed onto the residence. The mother used her body to shield the child from the falling debris, sustaining injuries to her head and back in the process.
She was treated on scene by Paramedics before being transported to hospital by ambulance. The toddler was not seriously injured
