At approximately 07:00, emergency dispatchers received reports of a severe motor vehicle crash on the R56 routing towards Pietermaritzburg. KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service units, alongside local authorities, were immediately routed to the scene. Upon arrival, paramedics were confronted with a heavily compromised vehicle showing massive frontal and cabin damage resulting from the impact with the animal.
The occupants of the vehicle—a grandfather and his high school-aged granddaughter—were en route from their home to town, a journey intended to drop the teenager at school before the adult proceeded to the hospital for life-sustaining dialysis treatment. The routine trip was abruptly shattered when the stray cow stepped into the path of their vehicle, leaving the driver no time to take evasive action.
