Volkswagen South Africa has just introduced the highly-anticipated eighth generation of the iconic Golf GTI and as the vehicle enters the South African market, VW is launching the car in style. The brand will host an array of launch events around the country and an exciting mobile game in which petrolheads can secure their tickets to these special events.
#GTI8OnTour takes the concept of ‘car meets’ and gives it the edge, style and power that is synonymous with the Golf GTI’s status. What is no doubt one of South Africa’s most highly anticipated car launches this year, Volkswagen will introduce the Golf 8 GTI to consumers by touring it across the country, hosting underground ‘car meets’ in parking lots in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.
With the events around the around corner, Volkswagen South Africa shares eight things fans of the car need to know about these launches and how they can get the chance to test drive these cars first.

To make the launch more exciting, tickets are being given away on the official gaming app. To get entry to one of the launch events, fans need to play their way to obtaining a ticket. To prove their competitive edge, consumers will need to download the #GTI8OnTour gaming app for Apple or Android and clock their fastest time on the virtual streets to get onto the national leader board. A good race time equals a ticket, one that will guarantee fans a chance to not only attend the intimate events but also get into the driver’s seat of the Golf 8 GTI.
Launch Events Will Take Place Around The Country
The Golf 8 GTI launch events will happen in parkades around Mzansi this October. Cape Town kicks things off on 2 October at the CTICC parkade before moving to Durban at the Cornubia Mall Parkade on 9 October and finally arrives at the Fourways Mall parkade in Johannesburg on 16 October. Tickets for Johannesburg event sold out in just three weeks, but players can still win tickets for the Cape Town (this event is 80% sold out) and Durban events on the app. The events are Covid-compliant and in-line with government regulations. To ensure social distancing takes place, the events have been split up and each slot allocated to players will last one hour.
Enjoy A Gymkhana Experience
Those who score a ticket to these highly-anticipated events will be treated to an array of activities involving the Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI. Fans will be able to get a gymkhana experience which will see racers trying to manoeuvre a course in the fastest time possible – showing the full extent of the vehicle.
Take Part In The Goodyear 100m Speed Dash
Ticket holders will be able to experience the Golf 8 GTI for themselves at the events by taking part in the Goodyear 100m Speed Dash. As the name suggests, fans will be able to drive the car for 100m to get a feel for the vehicle. For those who want to drive the car, make sure you don’t forget to bring your valid South African drivers licence.
Heritage Cars Will Be On Display
While the events will officially launch the Golf 8 GTi into the South African market, fans will also be able to take a trip down memory lane and see just how Volkswagen has evolved over the years. An array of heritage cars will be on display at the different launches and will be a must-see for any car fanatic.
Experience The GTI In Virtual Reality
Volkswagen’s custom VR set-up will give fans a chance to experience the new GTI in high-definition virtual reality, before getting to hop behind the wheel of a real one.
