Just over 1000 eager swimmers gathered at the water’s edge of the Eikenhof Dam (Grabouw Country Club, Western Cape) on Saturday, 14 February 2015 to be part of the action at the inaugural Sanlam Cape Mile.
Competition was rife in the elite men’s race with Danie Marais, Myles Brown and Chad Ho swimming neck on neck for the duration of the event. The deciding factor would be an exciting sprint to the finish, with Marais clinching victory mere seconds ahead of Brown. “I felt good in the water, focused and ready to race,” said Marais. “Staying with Chad and Myles, I focused on my own race. When there was approximately 400m to 500m left I decided to give my all. I am very happy with my win. Although I train in Durban, I am originally from Clifton, so claiming a win in Cape Town is really nice”. Marais claimed victory in a lightning fast time of 17 minutes 41 seconds. Myles Brown came in second, while Chad Ho finished third.
