Swimmer set for Magic Mile Medley in support of the Heartlands Baby Sanctuary

Seen here:  Stefan Buchholz in action during a recent training session.

Stefan Buchholz, a keen sports enthusiast from Strand, will swim five miles (five waves of 1.6km each) at the 4th annual Sanlam Cape Mile on Sunday, 18 February 2018 in support of the Heartlands Baby Sanctuary.

Founded in 2015, the Heartlands Baby Sanctuary in Somerset West is a registered Child and Youth Care Centre and a Paediatric Hospice that provide 24 hour residential care for orphaned and vulnerable children from birth to 6 years of age; including Palliative/End of Life Care for children from birth to 12 years of age.

“Swimming is the perfect sport to use as a fundraising vehicle,” admits Buchholz.  “The Sanlam Cape Mile offers the opportunity to combine the joys and challenges of long distance swimming with a really good cause.  My plan is to swim all five waves in different swimming styles:  Breaststroke, Freestyle, Butterfly and Backstroke.  I will also swim the fifth wave in Freestyle.  Swimming all styles makes my project somewhat unique #MagicMileMedley.”

“I drive past the Heartlands Baby Sanctuary on my way to work each day,” continues Buchholz.  “When I first visited the Sanctuary they showed me the caring facilities and I also met some of the children and parents.  Heartlands helps to provide dignity and a warm space for these children and their families while going through the saddest, most difficult moments. If my campaign helps Heartlands to continue making a difference, I know that it is the right thing to support.”

“We sincerely appreciate Stefan’s courageousness in attempting the Sanlam Cape Mile for the second consecutive year,” says Cindy Lucas, Heartlands Baby Sanctuary Fundraising & Sustainability Manager.  “To run a Hospice In-Patient Unit, specialised care and skilled staff are needed.  We do everything possible to bring in funds to cover these costs.   While our services continually adapt to fit the needs of each individual child placed in our care, supporters such as Stefan help us to sustain and grow this project for the betterment of our communities.  We wish Stefan all the best in his endeavour, from all our Board members, management, staff and more so – every single child at Heartlands.”
