Celebrating its 5th anniversary in 2019, Stillwater Sports is excited to announce that the Sanlam Cape Mile brought to you by Sanlam Investments will boast an impressive prize purse of R170 000.
“The Sanlam Cape Mile has grown from strength to strength since the event’s inception in 2015,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director Stillwater Sports. “Thanks to the unwavering support received from swimmers, our sponsors and our partners, we are proud to introduce a substantial prize purse increase in 2019. Prize money will be allocated to the top 10 elite male and female swimmers, with the winners each taking home an impressive total of R30 000. We’ve been treated to an exciting sprint finish each year and eagerly look forward to a repeat in 2019. We hope to see more swimmers entering the elite category, vying for a share in the prize and adding to the excitement.”
“We are very excited to offer a R10 000 prize to the school that enters the most swimmers on the day,” continues Meyer. “Having a firm understanding of water safety and possessing the skill to swim is very important. We are proud to support the remarkable role that schools fulfil by offering this exciting incentive.
The top three relay teams will also be awarded for their efforts. We look forward to exciting racing combined with a fun day out with family members and friends at the 2019 Sanlam Cape Mile.”
According to reigning Sanlam Cape Mile elite men’s champion, Chad Ho (Morningside, Durban), the 2019 prize purse is fantastic. “There is no other swim in South Africa that has such a great prize purse or incentive to swim. It definitely draws both elites and aspiring open water swimmers. We are all going for the same goal which will only grow the competition.” Ho claimed gold at the 2018 Sanlam Cape Mile in a time of 19 minutes 08 seconds, while in 2017 he crossed the finish line first in 17 minutes 48 seconds.
SA open water swimmer, Danie Marais (Clifton) secured victory at the inaugural Sanlam Cape Mile in 2015 in an impressive time of 17 minutes 41 seconds. “The 2019 Sanlam Cape Mile offers a very good prize purse,” says Marais. “It means a lot to elite swimmers. A lot of effort is put into training to succeed. It also encourages healthy competition, in so doing helping the sport to grow.”
Michelle Weber (Franschhoek) has claimed victory three out of four times (2018, 2016 and 2015) in the Sanlam Cape Mile women’s elite race. “The prize money is very good for the elite mile in 2019,” says Weber. “It is important to reward top athletes for their efforts. This shows the youth that the sport is worth training for. In the long run SA will have more people who live an active, healthy lifestyle. The prize money will also result in a lot of competition, giving spectators an interesting race to watch.”
