Celebrating its 8th anniversary on Sunday 14 May 2023, when entering the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K runners (and walkers) can support one or all five of the event’s charities: Cape of Good Hope SPCA, Cotlands, help2read, Die Burger Kinderfonds and Reach For A Dream.

“We are passionate about the sport of road running for many reasons, but what makes it really special is the people,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “The road running community in South Africa is just that, a real community. Runners are generous by nature, and this is evident by the support that the event’s charities have received in previous years. We are thankful to each and every entrant for contributing. Runners that would like to donate towards the event’s five charities can do so when entering the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K online. No donation is too small and will enable the charities to continue making a difference in the lives of so many individuals and animals.”

Established in 1872, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the founding society of the SPCA movement in South Africa and is the oldest animal welfare organisation in the country. A registered non-profit organisation and Public Benefit Organisation, the society relies on the support of concerned individuals and corporates to continue operating

“We are honored to be chosen as one of the charities representing all animals,” says Belinda Abraham, Cape of Good Hope SPCA Spokesperson. “By supporting our cause, know that every step is one in the right direction. We are really excited to be part of the action of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K in May and look forward to meeting all the beautiful people stepping up to run for animals.”

Cotlands is a registered non-profit organisation that focuses on early childhood development (ECD) with a rich 85-year history of serving young, vulnerable children. Cotlands’ vision is to see children thrive in their formative years by increasing their access to quality play-based early learning opportunities.

“We are immensely grateful to all the runners who selected Cotlands as their charity of choice in 2022,” says Dr Monica Stach, Cotlands CEO. “We are honoured to be associated with an event that aims to improve and change the lives of people in our communities. By supporting Cotlands, runners will enable us to set up more toy libraries and playgroups in disadvantaged communities.”

A non-profit organisation, help2read’s mission is to erase illiteracy in South Africa’s disadvantaged communities, one literacy lesson at a time.  Since the organisation’s first one-on-one reading session in 2006, help2read has worked in over 400 schools and reached 23 000 children through their literacy programmes.

“We love being part of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K, an event that brings people together and encourages the celebration of the city and its residents,” says Lerato Monedi, help2read Spokesperson. “We are thankful for the support that we received in 2022. The funds went towards our Literacy Tutor Programme, where we employ youth for a year, and they offer reading support to learners in grades 2 – 4 in the township and rural schools. We are excited to be involved with the event again in 2023 and wish entrants all the best for race day. Run your best race but also take in the city views. It’s the most fun you can have while giving back to the community.”

Started in 1957, Die Burger Kinderfonds is a non-profit organisation that assists children in the community that are in need of trauma counselling

According to Suzaan Potgieter, Die Burger Kinderfonds Co-ordinator, it’s a privilege to be part of such a fun and successful event. “Not only is it a great opportunity for our Mother City to shine and for people to have fun, but it is also an event that benefits charities and supports locally,” says Potgieter. “The funds raised in 2022 were used for trauma counselling for children. The families of these children had no other means of paying for the necessary treatment. We would like to thank the entrants for their support, and we hope that you enjoy the race in our beautiful city.”

Established in 1988, Reach For A Dream seeks to inspire hope and help children to believe in the power of dreams.

“We are thankful to be a beneficiary of the beautiful Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series,” says Heidi Rowley, Reach For A Dream Foundation Spokesperson. “The partnership enables us to achieve our goals of fulfilling more dreams. As it is our 35th Birthday, we look forward to an incredible year where we can reach even more children and create a legacy of manifesting hope with the very exciting re-emergence of group activities for our dreamers and building more dream rooms in hospital spaces. To quote Eleanor Roosevelt, ‘The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams’. Go out there and have fun, believing in your hopes and dreams knowing you are making a difference in the life of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical illness.”
