Joburg’s leading performing arts groups will be the source of much excitement on route at the 2nd annual FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN on Sunday, 24 September 2017.
Dance groups to look out for will include: Moving into Dance Mophatong (MID), The Field Band Foundation, the Parktown Boys’ High School Band and the Sophiatown Majorettes Club.
A premier African dance company and training academy, MID has both a national and international footprint.
According to Mark Hawkins, MID Artistic Director, the group loves the spirit of the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN. “We are excited to be able to inspire the runners to reach their final goal and dreams. We’re looking forward to showing our skill, not only to runners but also to the bystanders and supporters. The audience can look forward to high energy and exuberance. Our goal is to encourage entrants to achieve what they set out to achieve.”
The Field Band Foundation is a non-profit company that was established in 1997 to bring the global performance band concept to disadvantaged areas of South Africa, with the goal to develop a uniquely indigenous variant of this performance type.
“We are excited to be part of an event of this magnitude,” says Paul Pereira, Public Affairs Consultant to the Field Band Foundation. “We look forward to treating runners to a great vibe and cheerful music. Runners can look forward to hearing echoing sounds of brass, percussion, marimbas and steel drums.”
The Sophiatown Majorettes Club was established in Westbury 2015 with the aim to restore the sport of majorettes in township communities.
“We are super excited to be part of this year’s FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN,” says Leanne King-Alexander, Head Coach at the Sophiatown Majorettes Club. “Through our participation we are hoping to broaden the mind-set of our majorettes as they will be able to experience and interact with a greater community. By showcasing our skills and our beloved sport we would love to encourage and inspire other young ladies to reach for their dreams. Runners can look forward to synchronized choreography, energy and passion; with a burst of colour.”
The Parktown Boys’ High School has a reputation for excellence in music as an extra-curricular activity.
According to Godfrey Bell, Master in Charge at the Parktown Boys’ High School Band, the group comprises of boys between the ages of 14 to 17. “The current band is renowned throughout South Africa. The drum corps having won M Net’s 30 seconds to fame (twice), the St. Stithians Recess revolution competition as well as the National Band Competition in the Drum Corps section. We enjoy what we do and trust that the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN runners will be pleasantly surprised.”

Iconic landmarks to look out for on the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN route will include: the Nelson Mandela Bridge, FNB Bank City, Constitution Hill, Mary Fitzgerald Square, Wits University and Ellis Park Stadium to mention just a few.
