Claudia Dieckmann will once again spearhead a group of swimmers that will take on the Western Cape’s premier open water swim, the 5th annual Sanlam Cape Mile brought to you by Sanlam Investments at the majestic Eikenhof Dam (Elgin-Grabouw Country Club) on Sunday, 17 February 2019 in support of Multiple Sclerosis South Africa (MSSA).

A keen swimmer, Dieckmann was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2011 at the age of 31.  MS is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and body.  Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis.

“The Sanlam Cape Mile is such a well-run event,” says Dieckmann.  “In 2018 we had close to 30 people swimming as part of Team Swim4MS.  We felt very welcome and the vibe created in the festival village was electrifying. The event definitely exceeded our expectations and was a great fundraising effort with close to R70 000 being raised for the cause.  Fundraising is always a goal, as having a chronic and potentially disabling condition like MS is financially stressful.  Other than this, we hope to increase the awareness of MS at the 2019 event.”

“I want people to realize that the MS they may have witnessed in the past is not the same as MS today,” continues Dieckmann.  “MS is not a death sentence.   With advancements in research and medication it is possible to live a fulfilling life.  You just have to manage your symptoms.  Management includes a variety of activities such as medication, a change in lifestyle and having a great Neurologist with whom you can discuss any concerns and possible treatment plans.  Exercise is essential as it keeps the muscles moving, not to mention its psychological benefits.   I am a huge advocate of the benefits of swimming for MS. The cool, weightless environment is ideal.  That is why the Sanlam Cape Mile is the perfect event for our cause.  We are really looking forward to taking part in 2019 and would love to have more swimmers Swim4MS on the day.”
