JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition in support of Durban’s charities

Durban runners can support five Durban based charities when they sign up for the JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition that will take place on Friday 24 September 2021 (National Heritage Day).

Forming part of SA’s premier road running series, the RUN YOUR CITY Series, the JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition proudly supports the following five Durban based charities:  Durban & Coast SPCA, iThemba Lethu, Reach For A Dream Foundation (RFAD), TREE and LIV Village.

The Durban & Coast SPCA rescues abused and neglected domestic, farm and wild animals, while promoting responsible pet ownership, providing a shelter for strays, and a veterinary service for pets of underprivileged people“The pandemic has forced us to adapt in many ways in order to keep the wheels turning,” says Tanya Fleischer, Durban & Coast SPCA Marketing Manager.  “Being selected as a charity of the JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition is a lovely surprise, and we are absolutely thrilled.  All funds received will be put towards caring for animals, whether it be petrol for inspectorate vans to get to animals in need, filling animal food bowls at our SPCA, providing warm blankets for animals or treating stray animals in our clinic.”  For further information on the Durban & Coast SPCA please visit:  www.spcadbn.org.za

Since 2000, iThemba Lethu has been a transition home for many abandoned and vulnerable babies and children, providing a safe, loving and nurturing place as we work to re-unite them back into their biological families or find them new forever families through the process of adoption. In conjunction with the Family Integration Programme, the Breastmilk Bank affords the babies in the homes and surrounding hospitals, donor breast milk for optimum health and growth.  The HIV prevention programme works to equip the youth and leaders of tomorrow with life skills, leadership skills and education to help them make wise, hope-filled decisions for their lives. As part of this programme iThemba Lethu also engages with the learner’s family units to offer them support, investing in income generating opportunities and community upliftment, as well as specifically working with the men in the community through their Fatherhood Programme, all to create better home environments.  According to Melissa Leslie, iThemba Lethu Co-Ordinator, the pandemic has resulted in a reduction in funding and an increase in need in the community due to increasing unemployment.  “It is such a privilege to be a selected charity for this great Nation building event that creates unity while bringing together fellow South Africans in a common love of running.  Funds raised will go towards the provision of nappies and nutrition for the babies in our baby home and food relief for our community.”  For further information on iThemba Lethu please visit:  www.ithembalethu.org.za

Established in 1988, Reach For A Dream seeks to inspire hope and help children to believe in the power of dreams“We are very excited to be selected as a beneficiary of the 2021 JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition,” says Natalie Lazaris, Reach For A Dream Business Head.  “We have been a beneficiary of the JOBURG 10K CITYRUN for many years and all the proceeds raised have really allowed us to positively impact the lives of children who are fighting a life-threatening illness.  The ability to raise funds again through this platform, especially during these very unforeseen times, is an incredible opportunity for us to continue the wonderful work that we do.  The funds raised will be used towards dream fulfillment for children between the ages of three and 18.”  For further information on Reach For a Dream please visit:  www.reachforadream.org.za

Founded in 1984, TREE (Training and Resources in Early Education) is a non-profit organisation that specialises in Early Childhood Development (ECD), Resource and Training development of/for the ECD Workforce with a special focus on Women Empowerment“We deeply appreciate being selected as a charity for the 2021 JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition,” says Ruby Motaung, TREE Director.  “We have always been a charity of the DURBAN 10K CITYRUN however to broaden our visibility in the city of Johannesburg is a huge privilege.  Funds raised will go towards our non-centre based programmes within the deep rural communities that we work in. These programmes focus on creating enabling environments that stimulate the child’s brain development from birth to five years.  TREE has also been severely compromised due to the recent unrest as our Durban offices have been looted. The estimated damage is between 8-9 million rand. The funds raised will also go towards rebuilding the organisation so that we can fast track our operational activities.”  For further information on TREE please visit www.tree-ecd.co.za

Based in the community of Cottonlands, just outside of Verulam in Durban (KZN), LIV Village was founded in 2010 and first opened to mothers and children in August 2011.  “We are proud to be selected as a charity of the JOBURG 10K CITYRUN Virtual Edition,” says Hannah Cobbold, LIV Village Durban Marketing Assistant.  “Most of our events and visits have had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.  Schools have been interrupted and in person lessons had to stop. We’ve had less volunteers coming to help out and we have unfortunately lost a few of our staff members to the pandemic.  Receiving support from people in our region, country and all over the world means a lot to us. And we see our supporters as our global family.  The funds raised will go towards the provision of holistic residential care for orphaned and vulnerable children.  Our goal is to rescue a child, restore a life, raise a leader and release a star.”  For further information on LIV Village please visit www.liv-village.com
