DURBAN, JUNE 26, 2022 – LOCAL sports fans don’t want to miss South Africa’s first, two-hour team horse racing events by Global Team Horse Racing (GTH), which will come charging into Durban in August and be broadcast live on DSTV’s SuperSport channel.

Spectators can catch all the action at Hollywoodbets Greyville, a Durban icon and one of South Africa’s most popular thoroughbred horse-racing tracks, with live races being held on Friday nights over four weeks.

The fixtures have been added to Gold Circle’s 2022 horse-racing calendar and will add a new dimension to the local horse racing scene.

GTH has invested R15-million into the event over two years, with almost R3.5 million allocated to stakes for the series.

The Format

There are eight horses per race (four ‘runners’ per team) and teams will compete head-to-head over three nights (August 5, 12 and 19), while trainers and owners strategise about which horse and jockey are best suited to compete in which race in order to score the maximum points.

Each runner will score points based on their finishing position with points being accumulated throughout the event and the team with the most points at the end wins.

The top two teams from the series will go on to compete for the Winner’s Cup in the finale on Friday, September 2, 2022, the fourth and final night of the tournament.

Angus Campbell, who heads up the local GTH racing team, said: “Team-based thoroughbred horse racing is entirely new, but spectators don’t need any experience or prior knowledge to enjoy these exciting events live or on their TV screens.”

GTH said 90% of spectators at trial events held in South Africa 2020 had indicated that they would be back.

Hollywoodbets Greyville will be transformed when the thrilling night series gets underway. Organisers are planning plenty of fun activities and entertainment for families and kids. The full 2022 GTH series will be broadcast live on DSTV’s SuperSport, and fans can follow their favourites online at www.gthracing.co.za. If they cannot make it to the races.

GTH are planning more high-octane live series in international territories in the years to come.

Campbell said: “We anticipate great support, and we are excited to introduce more South Africans to the thrill of thoroughbred horse racing – the Sport of Kings.”

Tickets will be available for purchase online from TIXSA as well as at the venue on the night. General admission costs R100. Exclusive Trackside Paddock tickets, which includes food and beverages, is R500.
