Multiple Sclerosis South Africa (MSSA) received a welcomed donation of R45 000 thanks to swimmers that participated in the 5th annual Sanlam Cape Mile brought to you by Sanlam Investments at the serene Eikenhof Dam (Elgin Grabouw Country Club/Western Cape) on Sunday, 17 February 2019.

Amongst these entries were Claudia Dieckmann and a group of 23 swimmers, 7 of whom have Multiple Sclerosis (MS) that competed in support of Multiple Sclerosis South Africa (MSSA).

Dieckmann was diagnosed with MS in 2011 at the age of 31.  MS is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and body.  Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis.

“Over R45 000 was raised for MS at the 2019 Sanlam Cape Mile,” says a very happy Dieckman.  “We felt very welcome and the vibe created in the festival village was electrifying.  It was such a fun day and as usual it was very well run and extremely professional.  We are bowled over by the generous donations made by the 2019 entrants.”

“We want people to realize that the MS they may have witnessed in the past is not the same as MS today,” continues Dieckmann.  “MS is not a death sentence.   With advancements in research and medication it is possible to live a fulfilling life.  Exercise is essential as it keeps the muscles moving, not to mention its psychological benefits.   I am a huge advocate of the benefits of swimming for MS. The cool, weightless environment is ideal.  That is why the Sanlam Cape Mile is the perfect event for our cause.  We are thankful to Stillwater Sports for opening the Sanlam Cape Mile platform so that we could swim and raise funds for MS.  We will definitely be back in 2020 and would love to have more swimmers Swim4MS on the day.”

“Multiple Sclerosis South Africa is thankful to Stillwater Sports and all the Sanlam Cape Mile sponsors for the opportunity to showcase our cause,” says Non Smit, Director Multiple Sclerosis South Africa (MSSA).  “The event created awareness for MS and raised much needed funds for those who are in need of care.  Claudia is a Star-Activist.  Living with MS herself, she exhilarates and inspires people living with MS to greater heights.  The total amount raised is absolutely fantastic.  We are looking forward to the next Sanlam Cape Mile.”
