Excitement is building in the Boxer Super Run Elite Men’s Race with a strong contingent of Boxer Athletics Club elite runners, including the likes of Elroy Gelant, Precious Mashele, Kabelo Mulaudzi and Nicholas Seoposengwe, eagerly confirming their participation on Sunday 15 October 2023.
With an impressive overall prize purse of R147 200.00 in the Elite and Open Wave, race day is sure to evoke fierce competition among all participants, even teammates.
“There’s nothing that beats the feeling of running your heart out, with your legs and lungs burning as you cross the finish line,” says Elroy Gelant. “For me, a 5km race demands your absolute best, right from the moment the starting gun echoes to the exhilarating finish. There’s little margin for error. The Boxer Super Run is a remarkable initiative on multiple fronts. Firstly, it plays a crucial role in nurturing the talent of our rising junior athletes. Secondly, it promises intense competition by drawing some of South Africa’s finest athletes. Competing against the nation’s best provides an opportunity for athletes to test their mettle and extend their boundaries, ultimately contributing to the growth of our sport. The Boxer Super Run prize purse is a significant motivator, elevating the level of competition, while recognizing the relentless effort we put in. My aim is to give it my all. I hope to beat my PB of 14.27 that was set in Johannesburg back in 2017.”
As an athlete who typically specializes in 10km and Half Marathon races, Precious “The Machine” Mashele acknowledges the significance of the 5km distance in enhancing his speed. “The 5km plays an important part in my training, it helps enhance leg turnover and overall speed,” says Mashele. “The Boxer Super Run is a good initiative. For elite athletes like us, the chance to participate in a well-organized 5km race that truly tests our speed is rare. On race day, my objective is to improve upon my personal best, which I achieved at high altitude in Johannesburg. I enjoy running in Durban, and with the fast course that is at sea-level, I’m optimistic about achieving a strong time, and possibly dipping under the 14-minute mark.” Mashele boasts a noteworthy 5km personal best of 14:08.
According to Kabelo Mulaudzi, the Boxer Super Run offers a fantastic platform for athletes to test their skills in shorter distances. “What I find most exhilarating about the 5km is that it demands the speed of a 1500m athlete and the endurance of a 10,000m athlete,” Mulaudzi shares. “On race day, my objective is to achieve a personal best time and, with any luck, secure a spot on the podium.” Mulaudzi boasts an outstanding 5000m personal best of 14:05.
“The 5km distance provides a welcoming platform for runners of all ages, particularly young and aspiring athletes,” emphasizes Nicholas Seoposengwe. “The Boxer Super Run is a fantastic initiative, aimed at enhancing the performance of our budding stars in South Africa. With the 5km now making its mark on the international stage, athletes can utilize the Boxer Super Run as valuable preparation. As the reigning SA 5km champion, my aim is to improve upon my personal best time, while going for the win.” Seoposengwe boasts an impressive 5km personal best of 14:18.
