An impressive list of elite female athletes will celebrate National Women’s Day on Tuesday 09 August 2022 by taking on the iconic Totalports Women’s Race in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban in support of PinkDrive.

The list of athletes to look out for will include Tanith Maxwell, Zintle Xiniwe, Fortunate Chidzivo and Olympian, multiple SA Champion and record holder Zola Pieterse (née Budd) in Cape Town, Glenrose Xaba, Lebo Phalula, Lebogang Phalula and Cacisile Sosibo in Johannesburg and Tayla Kavanagh in Durban to mention just a few.

According to Tanith Maxwell, hosting the event on National Women’s Day makes it unique. “We are truly able to celebrate Women’s Day by bringing women together under the Totalsports Women’s Race banner. I have participated in the Totalsports Women’s Race many times. There is something special about lining up in a women’s only race. The atmosphere just makes it memorable year after year. Unfortunately, I am currently injured, so I will take part merely to enjoy the atmosphere. My message to runners is to first and foremost go out there and have fun! Celebrate Women’s Day in the most active, healthy way and just enjoy being part of the event!!”

“The Totalsports Women’s Race is a fantastic way to celebration National Women’s Day,” says Fortunate Chidzivo. “Being able to exercise is important when it comes to staying healthy. I recently recovered from influenza. My goal is to feel 100% healthy and have a solid run. If it’s a good day I will be happy with a sub 34min finish. Maintaining balance in life is the most important thing for me. I can’t wait to join thousands of women on the start line on Tuesday 09 August.”

According to Zola Pieterse, the Totalsports Women’s Race is a wonderful opportunity to showcase female running. “It’s a good event to run. My goal will be to have a solid run, while enjoying the moment. I am just thankful that I can still run. My message to other runners is to enjoy the moment and don’t worry about the outcome.”

“National Women’s Day is about elevating women, so I am very happy to take part in the Totalsports Women’s Race on Women’s Day,” says Lebogang Phalula. “It’s been a while since this race was hosted (2019 due the pandemic). I am very excited that it’s back in 2022. My goal will be to finish the race with pride. To everyone taking part, have fun.”

“Having thousands of women come together to run in the streets of Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban in celebration of what we as women can achieve, is a great reminder of what women can do when we work together,” says Tayla Kavanagh. “It’s lovely to have mass participation races back again. I enjoy running in Durban, my home city. My goal will be to test my fitness, while enjoying the morning with thousands of women in Durban.”

The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Cllr Mpho Phalatse, will also be among the women and men who will walk and run the streets while #PaintingTheCityPink on National Women’s Day!
